Hi. I’m Susie.
(And Carlos)
I am a writer, speaker, and podcaster who never seems to run out of words. But don’t worry. I can listen well, too.
With lived experience of having type 1 diabetes; gastroparesis; ME/CFS; and have even had brain surgery, let’s just say… I’ve been around.
I write about chronic illness, identity, and the strange dark comedy of living in a body that regularly goes off-script. But not just that. I’m working on a thriller (Which includes a character with disabiity) and have completed a dramatic novel manuscript.
My writing has appeared in ‘AM Ink’s The Half That You See’, The Mighty’, ‘DWC Magazine’ and NewYok Times best selling author, Esme Wang’s publication, ‘Reasons for Living.’ I also have a regular newspaper column in six Canadian newspapers called, ‘Expert Patient Here To Help!’ My newsletter and Substack publication goes out to a community of readers who, like me, appreciate honesty over inspiration porn.
I speak at events, panels, and organisations that want someone who can make a room laugh and think at the same time — ideally in that order. My topics sit firmly in the world of chronic and invisible illness: what it costs, what it teaches, how to get the most from medical appointments, and the intersection of mental health and chronic illness. I love to inspire and motivate people to overcome health challenges when possible, but even more, come to peace with their bodies.
I co-host I See You, a podcast about invisible and chronic illness, with my friend and fellow advocate Erica Zacharias. (Launchng July 7th) We talk about everything the wellness industry won't touch — with banter, dark humour, and zero toxic positivity.
In all that I do, you get the real me. Honesty; vulnerabilty; an open book.
Oh, and also a bit of murder.
“Thanks to over 39 years of living with chronic illness, Susie is the definition of an expert patient. She comes to her appointments prepared, asks good questions and knows her body well. Not only do I strive to help her manage her symptoms, but also value her input in my research and educational efforts when it comes to diabetes and gastroparesis. It was Susie I asked to write the patient perspective in an article written by my colleagues and myself, for Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews. We have a mutual trust and respect that is often lacking in the ‘doctor/patient’ relationship. Susie can help get you there.”
